Doctoral Counseling Intern

Below is a general description of the experience and what you can expect. That said, there is room to make it what you want within what we can support, as we have capacity. While having a foundation, this experience is also collaborative.

Who Is this Internship For?
This internship is for doctoral students who have completed their master’s level practicum. This internship can be separate from or in conjunction with a field experience for course credit. For Counseling Psychology students, this is not an APPIC pre-doctoral internship.
Professional Development Focus:
The doctoral internship at Chosen, PLLC is designed to support the learning and development of doctoral students in the counseling field. The knowledge and experience of Dr. Leatrice Brooks, LP, and Team Chosen will provide expertise and insight into the day-to-day work of mental health service provision in a private practice setting, as well as organizational leadership. Applicants should have at least an educational limited license.
This internship builds higher-level thinking and skills, self-awareness, and professional identity. There may be opportunities to accompany and assist Dr. Brooks with professional speaking engagements and executive coaching as part of The Power in Presence brand. There may also be other community engagement experiences.
The Experience:
This field experience is a minimum of a 7-month commitment. Interns will work directly with Dr. Brooks to identify goals and desired outcomes.
- Dedicated office
- Individual counseling (intakes and follow-up appointments) – 5 weekly minimum with ramp-up based on capacity
- Scheduling, progress notes, case conceptualization
- Hybrid: In-person and telehealth
- Weekly individual supervision with Dr. Brooks as per licensing board requirements
- Leadership, speaking, and executive coaching shadowing and assisting with Dr. Brooks
- Team meeting (when able to attend per academic schedule)
- Team relationship building
- Professional development and networking events
- Social invitations to get to know the team and Kalamazoo
- End of internship reflection presentation/discussion with the team
Compensation:
- Interns will be paid a percentage (fee-split) of billable service hours (about $35/hour).
- Free LP or LPC supervision.
- Fees for participation in professional development opportunities and events is included.
